4.3 Cultural Industries Quarter
Influences
The Cultural Industries Quarter has been designated within the
UDP as follows:
- Mainly a Fringe Industry and Business Area.
- The area to north of Quarter is a Business and Industry area.
- As an Area of Special Character at the north of the quarter,
which has now acquired Conservation Area status.
The CIQ’s evolution is currently being guided by a Quarter Action
Plan. Many developments proposed within this document are currently
completed or underway, including:
- New-build housing in the Matilda Street area which will re-populate
the quarter and sustain mixed use developments within the area.
- Conversion of the former bus depot to mixed use development
with a high student accommodation component to strengthen the
relationship between the CIQ and Sheaf Valley Quarter.
- Improvement of the Midland Station, enabling Sheaf Square to
be developed as major arrival space and gateway to the city. This
development will improve the connectivity of the quarter with
the rest of city centre and allow the creation of several new
development sites.
The City Centre Living Strategy promotes further young people’s/student
housing, as well as live/work spaces and accommodation for childless
workers. This will take the form of student schemes including those
at Sterling Works, Dyson House, Exchange Works, Leadmill Bus Garage
(part) and Columbia Works. Housing with businesses in the ground
floor will be located at Sterling and Butcher Works, Leadmill Street
and Matilda Lane.
