5.1 Public Realm Design Guidelines
Summary of Design Guidelines
The ordering principle for the city centre’s streets and spaces
was established in section 3.3 and identifies three levels within
the hierarchy of streets and spaces throughout the city centre.
The corresponding matrix of recommended treatment in relation
to the design guidelines is summarised below.
5.1 Materials Palette
-
Primary
- Footways
- Hard Pennine Sandstone. Service covers fully integrated
into paved surfaces.
- Carriageways
- Granite setts on streets of special character. Elsewhere
hot rolled asphalt with green aggregate in clear binder. Pedestrian
crossings to be paved in large dark grey/ black granite blocks
as on Surrey street.
- Kerbs / Channel Blocks
- Kerbs: Granite /Mid Grey colour to contrast with carriageway
surface.Channel blocks: dark grey /black
- Street Furniture & Signs
- SCC Bronze palette for Heart of City.
- SCC Stainless Steel palette elsewhere.
- SCC ductile iron tree grilles and drainage covers (see table
5.2).
- Signage to ‘Connect Sheffield’ approved product range.
- Trees / Planting
- Street trees to be semi-mature to SCC specification planted
in extended pits using approved structural soil system.
- Planting to be innovative and to achieve highest standards
of design and maintenance.
- Lighting
- Premium Quality Appropriately scaled carriageway lighting
on tapered columns.
- Building mounted lighting where possible
- Lower tapered columns for extra wide footways and pedestrian
areas.
- Supplementary low level amenity lighting.
- Water
- Premium quality special design at civic scale.
- Visual Arts
- Site specific commissions using highest standards of materials
and achieving highest standards of craftsmanship. May be incorporated
into functional elements of the streetscape.
- Climate & Structures
- Canopies relating to transport facilities to PTE / SCC approved
model.
- Bespoke canopies to be of highest standards of design and
to be sensitive to architectural context.
-
Secondary
- Footways
- Generally using approved ‘Sheffield Flag’ high quality ground
surface to approved SCC specificationService covers fully
integrated into paved surfaces
- Carriageways
- Stone Mastic Asphalt.
- Pedestrian crossings to be black imprinted tarmac with pattern
to match large granite block crossings on primary streets
