5.1 Public Realm Design Guidelines

Summary of Design Guidelines

The ordering principle for the city centre’s streets and spaces was established in section 3.3 and identifies three levels within the hierarchy of streets and spaces throughout the city centre. The corresponding matrix of recommended treatment in relation to the design guidelines is summarised below.

5.1 Materials Palette

  • Primary

  • Footways
    • Hard Pennine Sandstone. Service covers fully integrated into paved surfaces.

  • Carriageways
    • Granite setts on streets of special character. Elsewhere hot rolled asphalt with green aggregate in clear binder. Pedestrian crossings to be paved in large dark grey/ black granite blocks as on Surrey street.
  • Kerbs / Channel Blocks
    • Kerbs: Granite /Mid Grey colour to contrast with carriageway surface.Channel blocks: dark grey /black

  • Street Furniture & Signs
    • SCC Bronze palette for Heart of City.
    • SCC Stainless Steel palette elsewhere.
    • SCC ductile iron tree grilles and drainage covers (see table 5.2).
    • Signage to ‘Connect Sheffield’ approved product range.

  • Trees / Planting
    • Street trees to be semi-mature to SCC specification planted in extended pits using approved structural soil system.
    • Planting to be innovative and to achieve highest standards of design and maintenance.

  • Lighting
    • Premium Quality Appropriately scaled carriageway lighting on tapered columns.
    • Building mounted lighting where possible
    • Lower tapered columns for extra wide footways and pedestrian areas.
    • Supplementary low level amenity lighting.

  • Water
    • Premium quality special design at civic scale.

  • Visual Arts
    • Site specific commissions using highest standards of materials and achieving highest standards of craftsmanship. May be incorporated into functional elements of the streetscape.

  • Climate & Structures
    • Canopies relating to transport facilities to PTE / SCC approved model.
    • Bespoke canopies to be of highest standards of design and to be sensitive to architectural context.

  • Secondary

  • Footways
    • Generally using approved ‘Sheffield Flag’ high quality ground surface to approved SCC specificationService covers fully integrated into paved surfaces

  • Carriageways
    • Stone Mastic Asphalt.
    • Pedestrian crossings to be black imprinted tarmac with pattern to match large granite block crossings on primary streets
  • Kerbs / Channel Blocks
    • Kerbs: Granite, Mid Grey colour to contrast with carriageway surface

  • Street Furniture & Signs
    • SCC Stainless Steel palette.
    • SCC ductile iron tree grilles and drainage covers.
    • Signage to ‘Connect Sheffield’ approved product range.

    • Silver Grey Granite aggregate concrete blocks with green/ grey granite trims/ Channel blocks.
    • Areas of paving under canopies/ building overhangs or adjoining shop fronts to be paved with granite on reinforced sub-base with grouted joints, service covers fully integrated.

  • Carriageways
    • Stone Mastic Asphalt.
